Hiking on
Mt. Desert Island

Family on Champlain Mt.

Mount Desert Island's more than 100 miles of hiking trails offer many routes for hikers of all abilities who want to explore the Islands's hills and valleys on foot.

There are walks around lakes, over the bare summits of the Island's hills or through the forests. Most of the hill tops are bare, hence the name "Mount Desert" (translated from the French, means "Bare Mountains.") Our mountains are not very high... Cadillac is the highest at 1,532 feet... but they offer beautiful views of the surrounding ocean and islands.

Several hiking publications and trail maps are available in the Office.
